MBTI & Suicide
“I was wondering if anyone has done any studies on MBTI and suicide.
What types are most likely to commit suicide?
And what preferences? (specifically S and N)”
“I would definitely say Ts and Fs would be a logical choice.”
“…I would definitely say Ts and Fs would be a logical choice. I know that as an INTP, my tendancy to dwell over past mistakes tends to make it blow past my mind. Feelers may be more likely to commit it though, because they generally make decisions based upon their feelings, which at the moment, would be self-hatred or dissapointment.
Of course, like I said, thinkers tend to analyze situations- more so than most, so if they see a situation as truly desperate, and cannot escape it, they may just break down, and become stubborn towards any logic speaking otherwise.
Since Ns tend to look toward the future, they might be more likely to see a glimmer of hope in a bad situation, and that “things will get better.”
I really don’t see the J/P part having much of an effect, but maybe Js might be more likely to break down in a chaotic enviroment???
Introverts may be harder to recognize as needing help, since they keep their interaction with others to a minimum, making it harder to detect a change in their general attitude???
I’m not really sure.”
“Keirsey did some work in this area - he states that NF’s are the mostly likely to.
Of course his work is based on statistics.”
“I don’t think that we can make a blanket determination of “which type is more likely to commit suicide,” although there might possibly be a slight tendency in one over another (but forgive me if I can’t tell you what is).
I think a more useful breakdown is which types are more likely to have a particular REASON for suicide.
For example, INTPs killing themselves over existential angst more than another type seems plausible. Maybe INxx’s in general, on that one.
On the other hand, perhaps an ISFJ or ESFJ will be more likely to kill themselve because they just got dumped by someone they really loved and had given everything they had for.
ISTP and ESTP might be more likely to kill themselves because of powerlessness, an ESTJ because a situation has spiralled out of control and they feel impotent, and so forth.
(See where I am going with this?)”
